Volunteer vs private
I never really written about my volunteer company before.
Only because I've been told you never bite the hand that feeds.
My volunteer fire company helps me to maintain my national EMT registry. They pay for all my classes and they help me to get my refresher done every two years.
What did you think that the company that I work for help me with that?
Hell no!
My privatized company doesn't give us a hand up on anything.
My volunteer company took my word when I said I would give time to them. I would "work" off my debt. But no matter what I do I can never "repay" them for everything they have given to me.
They have given me the opportunity to help the community in ways I never thought possible. They trained me to push myself, to overcome my fears in order to help with out thinking of the self sacrifice.
Throughout everything they have welcomed me with open arms. There is 90% less bullshit with the volunteers. With the private company it was everyone for themselves. No one had your back and if you screwed up, you were on your own. But everyone knew about it. Because your screw up was a hot topic around the base.
When I volunteer, I make sure my intentions are on patient care. No on getting a leg up on being a quarter master. We work as a team. Teamwork in EVERY private company I have worked for so far is lacking. Money does change everything.
All on all:
Volunteer wins.
