A Dog Day in EMS
I saved a life today.
It came in a 9lb package named Rocky. It's not unusual to find a small animal wandering in my neighborhood.
When I was on my way to school. There was a small white and brown chihuahua by a fence off the main road. I slowed down. I realized I recognized the dog from the summer.
He was lost over the summer. There were posters posted all over my neighborhood all summer long. I figure he was recently returned to the owner, because the sign had recently been taken down.
He took one look at me and bolted.
I got out of the car and shook a bag of old McDonald's french fries. Hey, It works for my dog. Hell, My dogs would have been like....FOOD? Where?
He just kept running full speed toward the busy main street in morning rush hour traffic! He ran behind a black car heading east and that is when it happen. He ran in to the path of pinkish maroon car.
His back leg was clipped. He screamed. My stomach turned, as I heard his body scrap along the asphalt. I kept running for him. He was drug into the crosswalk from the west bound lane.
He laid there limp.
I was in shock.
No.
A life was cut short, and I was helpless. I slowed down my run; because, I thought it was over. I started to treat the driver of the car that hit little Rocky. She was in shock and panic as to what just happened.
We were discussing what had just happened. She didn't know what she had hit. As I was pointing to Rocky's limp body, he started to move. I couldn't believe it. This little dog was not moving at all a second ago. I was only 5 feet away from him. He looked like the worst had happened. His chest was not moving, and he laid there limp.
I started to run towards his side, and he got up, and bolted. He was running on pure adrenaline.
I chased him through a field. I lost him once we hit the neighborhood.
I had other people following me. They had seen the whole thing happen, and they wanted to help.
I figured I would look around tree, or under the cars, anywhere this little dog could hide. I found him once I walk through the unfenced backyard. He was standing on a deck in front of a home the front door was open.
The crowd caught up with me EVERYONE wanted to rush him to the vet. Rocky was scared. I knocked frantically on the front door and rang the doorbell.
The owner's son came out and tried to pick him up. Rocky snapped at him. You could tell he was in a lot of pain. I had the son give me a blanket and a basket. I gently wrapped him up and placed him the basket. I left with the hope that the owner was on her way home to rush him to the vet.
I actually passed her walking back to my car. I went back to check on the driver. I had left her with a nearby worker, telling him if she didn't calm down, or start to go pale, to call 911.
She refused medical help.
She was standing on a curb besides my car. She had a look of relief when I told her Rocky didn't look too bad. i told her I thought he definitely a broke leg, but the quick DCAP BTLS I did on him didn't show too much damage. He was able to move all his appendages and he had a what looked like a bruise on his shoulder, a few red spots, and what I thought was simple fracture of his hind leg. HE was nursing my hind leg and his front paw.
Next thing I knew, the owner with Rocky in the back handed me a napkin, told me to call her and rushed off. The woman who hit Rocky was like please could you give her number. I did.
How does this story end?
I went to school. Rocky went to the vet. Right now it is too late to call Rocky's owner to see if this will be a happy ending or not.
I will follow up with her tomorrow. If Rocky was able to be saved, I will help to fund raise for his medical bills. I'm kinda scared. I don't like to see people hurting. For the second, I actually met the owner of Rocky I knew she was upset.
WHY am like this?
Scared to fail. I did everything in my power and work in the best interest for all the patients involved. I could have walked away. I was late for class. He was home. I didn't have to take a quick look over him.
He was home, I could have just left him there.
I'm just afraid if she had to put him down, and she would be upset I couldn't catch him. I didn't get engaged until I realized he was running toward traffic. I had only made eye contact with him. How was I to know he was going to take off? Why am I blaming myself?
I am not a superhero.
I will find out tomorrow how this adventure ends.

This is the owner's family of Rocket (Jsckrussel). I want to thank you for helping save my dog's life, he is fine, and he just has a scratch on his back and a bruise on his foot. It is a miracle that he is still alive. Also, I would like to thank everyone for being so concern about him. He is still playful as ever :)
Sincerely,
The Skinner Family
